Rohit Sharma should not captain if he misses 2 Tests in AUS: Gavaskar

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels that Jasprit Bumrah should be made the captain of Indian team if Rohit Sharma misses more than one Test match in the Australia series. Speaking to Sports Tak, Gavaskar demanded clarity from the Indian management and stressed that it is crucial that the India captain play the first match of the Australia tour.
India captain Rohit Sharma is likely to miss the first Test match of the Australia series. Rohit, who is expecting his second child with wife Ritika Sajdeh is expected to get back in the team from the second game of the series. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to captain the team in Perth.

Rohit Sharma was quizzed about the same after the Mumbai Test match and said that he is not sure about the schedule yet and was keeping his fingers crossed.
“It is important for the captain to play the first Test match. It’s different if he is injured, but if he is not available, then the deputy leader will be under a lot of pressure. I have been reading that Rohit Sharma might not play the first two Tests of the Australia series. I feel that, in that case the selection committee should appoint Jasprit Bumrah the captain of the side for the entire Australia tour, and tell Rohit Sharma that you will participate as a player in this series. For the first Test match, Rohit Sharma has to be there,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.
Rohit Sharma had a terrible time in the home Test series against New Zealand. The captain did not even score 100 runs across the three Tests and was one of the biggest underperformers in the series. Sharma had opened up on the form concerns of the senior India batters and had said that he was looking to quickly move on as India had a chance of creating something special in Australia.
The Indian team need 4 wins to qualify for the World Test Championship Final. The team cannot afford to lose a single game in the tour of Australia if they wish to directly qualify for the final of the tournament.
