Exclusive: Break Ke Baad director Danish Aslam confirms working with Imran Khan

Director Danish Aslam, in an exclusive chat with India Today Digital, spoke about actor Imran Khan, who is a very close friend of his, and confirmed that they are collaborating for something. Meanwhile, the filmmaker is all set with his next project. Titled Khawabon Ka Jhamela, the film starring Sayani Gupta and Prateik Babbar will be streaming on JioCinema from November 8. Ahead of that, Danish Aslam also opened up about his debut directorial, Break Ke Baad, receiving immense love after so many years.
During the interview, while speaking about rom-coms, director Danish Aslam mentioned his debut film as a director, Break Ke Baad. The 2010-film starred Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead and while it did not become a hit at the box office, it started getting more love in the later years. It was while talking about rom-coms and reviving the genre that he confirmed that he confirmed his upcoming collaboration with Imran Khan.
“I can’t really talk about that too much right now,” Aslam said while speaking about potential collaboration with Khan. He added, “I am working with him on something, and there has already been some stuff about it in the press as well. Some of it is true, some of it is not. Unfortunately, it is a project which is still a work-in-progress. So the moment things are locked and fall into place, we will very happily announce it to the world. But, all I can say is that I’m working with Imran Khan on something.”
Danish Aslam and Imran Khan share a close bond. The director also noted that it was while speaking to Khan that he realised that there is an audience who want to watch rom-coms. He shared, “In the last three years, both Imran and I have been contacted by so many people, who were teenagers at that time and are now in their twenties and thirties, asking ‘Where is that genre gone? We miss those straight-forward rom-coms’. They’re not being made anymore. Now you have a rom-com with social messaging, or you have a big actioner, very masculine film on a large canvas being made. That space (for rom-coms) has disappeared, and I genuinely feel that there is a huge market for that. There is a niche market for it, and people want that content.”
Imran Khan recently made his comeback on social media and fans have been elated. Danish Aslam told us, “Everywhere he went, every podcast he did he would tell me, ‘Everybody’s asking, where are those films gone?’ So, there is an audience for it. It is now not just poised to make a comeback, but it’s very actively coming back.”
He then added, “This film (Khwabon Ka Jhamela) is, for me, in that space, the difference being that the language has been updated. You can’t make those kinds of rom-coms today because the beauty of rom-com, as a genre, is that it’s not timeless like an action film.”
Khwabon Ka Jhamela will be streaming on JioCinema from November 8. It features Sayani Gupta and Prateik Babbar in the lead roles.
