Swallow (Hirundo rustica)
A swallow's plumage is just splendid - a dark metallic iridescent blue above, and pale orange below. The throat is a darker chestnut orange. Youngsters are similar to adults. but paler underneath, and with shorter tails. Males have the longest tails, and it is clear that females love long tail streamers. The most successful males may have streamers 8cm longer than the shortest feather tips.
These remarkable birds fly in flocks up to 16 hours a day catching insects on the wing. They prefer larger prey than their relatives, the house martins and sand martins. Flies form quite a large part of the diet, but they have been known to take prey as large as butterflies and dragonflies. If weather is severe, or there is more prey on the ground than in the air, they occasionally feed from the ground instead. They have been observed to brush against vegetation to disturb hiding insects, and take to caterpillars. or even berries, if food is scarce. Whilst spending their winters in Africa, termites form a very nutritious part of their diet.
Flocks of up to a thousand swallows accumulate in early autumn for the flight to Africa. Juveniles achieve this in comfortable hops of 200 to 300 kms, catching food on the wing. The big challenge is the Sahara - 1000kms with little chance of food. From there it is plain sailing, all the way to South Africa and Namibia, where British birds winter.
The birds leave again in late February or March, and take six weeks to get back. The first back claim the best territories..
The favourite locations for swallows' nests are on beams and rafters inside caves, barns, stables, garages, bridges, or porches. There needs to be a supply of wet mud within a few hundred yards. The nest is a neat cup, made out of soft mud, hay, grass, and straw, and is plastered securely to the site. The lining is made of feathers.
The song of the male swallow is soft and sweet, and the warbling may last up to 15 seconds. The arrival of a female will give the song an extra boost, but it becomes most vigorous when a rival male turns up. The alarm call is a short sharp 'tchisik' repeated in panic, over and over.
Swallows begin laying their eggs at the end of April, and with two or three clutches a year, there may still be chicks in the nest in October. Generally four or five eggs are laid in the first clutch (fewer in later clutches), and the chicks hatch in about two weeks. Fledging takes another two weeks, and during that time chicks may be fed up to 2 gms of insects, twenty times an hour. Adults also collect grit for their chicks, which aids their digestion.
