FIFTY YEARS AGo this coming September
I came to this organization to take the
place (for two weeks) of a young man
who went on a vacation. He never re-
turned. So I kept staying on and here I am, older than
I wish to be, but nevertheless, still enjoying my work.
I believe a business which one enjoys, and in which
one takes pride, makes for a happy business. I can
honestly say I have enjoyed my work and still like to
come in here each morning and greet these fine people,
a lot of whom have grown up with me. Some of them
have been with us from twenty-five to forty years. Any
success we have had, in my belief, is the result of a
group of men and women doing their best to make
a quality product and taking pride in their work.
Other than ring travelers, I believe there is not one
single product used by the textile industry that sells

at so small a price that you cannot figure the cost in
a pound of yarn or a yard of cloth. Still this article
which we produce in some 17,000 styles and sizes is
one of the most important in the production of textiles.
We have pioneered several new developments in
travelers, and shall continue to "keep a step ahead".
For spinning and twisting yarns and threads of every
description, in these days of ever higher speeds and
higher quality, you may depend upon us for the best
travelers that it is possible to make.
I greet you all, our customers and my fellow workers,
and thank you for the many, many fine friendships
which are so dear to me, and will continue to be so
as long as I live.

DURING OUR FIFTY YEARS of ring traveler production
we have always stressed Victor Quality. This golden
anniversary seems like a good time to step behind
the scenes and introduce you to some of the men.
women, machines, and processes that make our
quality claims possible.
Because travelers are such tiny pieces of equip-
ment, many people think that their manufacture
must be very simple. There are many steps, how-
OR

ever, and each one is rigidly controlled by experi-
enced workers. And while the surge of production
goes on, a trained technician is constantly checking
samples from each lot in our fully equipped
laboratory.
Starting on the second floor of our Mathewson
Street plant, the primary step in traveler production
is wire drawing. This operation shapes the bronze or
low carbon steel wire to the desired cross section
----------- 7 -----------
After removal from the furn-
ace, the travelers are quenched,
tested for proper hardness, then
tempered. Tempering is neces-
sary to give them the spring that
enables them to snap over a ring
without distortion.

before it is annealed and then fed
into the cutting machines.
We manufacture more than
17,000 different sizes and styles
of ring travelers, ranging from
25/1000 of a grain to 625 grains.
Because of this, the men who
operate the wire drawing and cut-
ting machines must all be skilled
operators, capable of making the
necessary adjustments on their
machines. At one end of a long
battery of cutters there are sev-
eral men working with jewelers'
eye-pieces and other types of
magnifiers. These Victor crafts-
men are making ring travelers
too small to examine carefully
with the naked
eye.
The shaped travelers are taken
in trays to the furnace room for
heat treating. Proper heat treat-
ment is one of the most important
steps in the whole process, and
Victor has pioneered in the field.
The travelers are heated in a
carburizing compound in oil, gas
and electric furnaces, electronic-
ally controlled to assure an even
temperature.
----------- 7 -----------
And finally these travelers that
started as a coil of steel wire are
packed in the familiar moisture-
proof metal cans . . . each can
marked with size and weight, and
IN
bearing the Victor trade mark.
These containers are crated and
shipped to textile plants all over
the world, where mill men have
learned that they can depend on
Victor Quality for better spinning
and twisting.
Though all Ring Travelers
may
look alike, their performance and
their value are measured by such
intangibles as the skills, the
ideals, and the integrity of the
men who make them.
To each of these workers, to
everyone in the Victor organiza-
tion, his individual task is not
the limit of his interest in the
product. Each and all take pride
in, and contribute to Victor's pol-
icy of "giving all we can for what
we get". That is why so many of
the nation's leading mills call on
Victor for travelers with complete
confidence that they are the best
that can be had.
----------- 8 -----------
ALONG WITH Victor Quality, Victor
Service can be credited for winning the
customers and friends who number so
many on Victor's Fiftieth Anniversary.
Because they must convey this im-
portant element of Victor's policy to
every mill they visit, Victor's Service
Engineers have been carefully chosen.
Each is
specialist, with up-to-the-minute infor-
mation on all fibers, natural and syn-
thetic, ready and able to help you get
more volume and better quality from
your spinning and twisting frames.
